Broadway icon Chita Rivera, renowned for her captivating performances as a singer, dancer, and actress, has passed away at the age of 91.

On Tuesday morning, the three-time Tony Award winner and nine-time nominee passed away following a brief illness.

Born in Washington, D.C., as Dolores Conchita Figueroa del Rivero, Rivera embraced a tomboy persona from her early years.

The versatile performer originated the role of Anita in the original Broadway production of "West Side Story."

Following "West Side Story," Rivera starred in Broadway's "Bye Bye Birdie" (earning her first Tony nomination) and "Bajour."

Rivera also appeared occasionally in film and on television.

She recorded several cast albums and three solo albums, including 2009's "And Now I Swing."

In 2002, Rivera received the Kennedy Center Honors, followed by the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009.
